Turning Leaf

Turning Leaf. To Turn a Leaf. The latest project that I am working on is for a bottle redesign in my Advanced Typography class. This project has just started but the frustrations in trying to come up with a concept has already begun. It wouldn’t be if I wanted to settle for the cliche design for a wine bottle. You can have the typical wine leaf and the simple type boring concepts that just subside to their name, or you could have something completely absolutely different. But what is different? Is it to totally go away from the word you are trying to illustrate yet draw metaphors to illustrate it? Is it to trash all previous concepts of what a name means and to redefine it? Whatever it is, it is fresh. The world will try to tell you that there is nothing new. In fact King SolomonĀ once wrote…

“‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.’ What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

But is it true? Is it true that there is nothing new under the sun? If there is nothing new under the sun what about over the sun? Can your mind reach over the sun, over the barriers that people place upon you? Things come and things go but can you create something that never leaves and never goes? It is true that there is a lot of history on this earth and that it’s hard to get away from what’s already been done because so many other people had a chance to do it first before you. But what is new? One of the definitions of new is to be FRESH. Is it possible to make something fresh?

YES! But the challenge is getting there.
